The two day NFI certification review and exam will be taught by Rocky Mountain Hearth, Patio and Barbecue Executive Director Larry Grogan. The certification course will be split into two days. Please arrive at the location by 7:45 a.m. Class begins promptly at 8 a.m.

  • September 22: Gas Review Class and Exam
  • September 23: Wood Review Class and Exam

Attendees have the option to attend one or both days of certification. The cost includes the exam, current reference manual, six hour review, and lunch.

In addition to the traditional review and exam package, attendees also have the option to do a review and exam only. If you don't want the manual and just want to take the review and exam, or are taking a retest (if you failed in the last six months) or renewal this is a good option.

If you are doing a test only without the review, a retest, a renewal, or don't want the manual, contact Larry Grogan at 480-772-2169, and he will do a manual invoice for you.

Your manual will be mailed to you within a week of registration. Attendees should try to register as soon as possible to ensure adequate  time to read and study the manual before the exam. The review class reviews the entire manual and does not review specifically what's on the exam.

Upon completion, and with a passing grade, candidates will receive NFI Certification credentials, including ID cards with photograph and listing on the NFI website. Certificates are good for three years and, with appropriate CEU’s earned, can be renewed indefinitely. Candidates who do not earn the required CEU’s for renewal have the opportunity to retest at a reduced cost.

Certification options

Gas: This certification is for professionals who install or plan gas hearth appliance systems and covers the installation knowledge specific to gas appliances and venting, including regulations and instructions, fuel delivery, appliance requirements, venting and ventilation, and troubleshooting. All major gas hearth appliances: fireplaces, gas log sets, inserts, and freestanding stoves; and venting methods; including conventional Type B vent, direct vent, liner systems, and vent-free are covered.

Wood: This certification covers both solid fuel factory-built fireplaces and all types of wood stoves, including freestanding, inserts, and manufactured high-efficiency fireplaces. In addition to core knowledge pertaining to wood burning appliances, installation and planning knowledge includes solid fuel appliance regulations and instructions, appliances, venting and ventilation, and troubleshooting.

When registering for one of the two above options, you will select a "review and exam package" based on the certifications you want to take.

Exam-Only: This option is available to attendees who do not want to purchase the manual and take the review course. They will only take the exam. Please select one of the "exam-only" options during registration based on your membership.

Exam-Only Retake or Retest: This option is available for attendees who need to retake one of the three exams (if you failed in the last six months). Please select one of the "exam-only retest or retake" options during registration based on your membership.

If you are a member, remember to sign-in to your profile before registering. This will give you access to the members-only prices.

*Registration will close Monday, September 12.
